Contemporary Judaica made in Amsterdam
Amsterdam Judaica's mission is to make beautiful ritual objects with no ethical compromises. Creating Jewish ritual tools here in Europe is for us an act of healing and regrowth, and we are proud to share these products with the world. Modern and contemporary menorahs are the core of what we currently offer, but we plan to soon offer shabbat candle holders, mezuzot and much more. If there is a product you are particularly keen to see us add, please let us know!
Bold and Pure Design
We make ritual tools that are elegant and simple. We follow halachic rules, but aren't interested in hewing to traditional aesthetics. We hope to make Judaica that will be treasured generation after generation, so we craft everything we make to be durable and have a timeless appeal.
These are dark times. Lighting candles can help.
I started leaning in to my Judaism early in the pandemic. The first week of lockdown, actually. We already celebrated shabbat in my family but doing it during that first week of uncertainty and dread felt different. For one thing I had to make the challah myself since our usual bakery had closed. For another thing, the importance of marking the end of the week felt more significant as we entered uncharted territory. The challah was so-so. The shabbat was unforgettable.
The second week, when we again celebrated shabbat, it felt like an anniversary. We would get through this.
Through the first months of the pandemic I began to more deeply appreciate the wisdom of celebrating the ending of the week, every week. This is what Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel calls "The Architecture of Time": sanctifying the passage of time with ritual in order to construct a more meaningful life.
Since then I've gotten a lot better at baking challah bread. I also started making candle holders, and moved to Amsterdam.
